The power of a coffee shop

IMG_0311.JPG

If there are few take aways I've gathered in life thus far, it's to never under estimate the power of a coffee shop. Whether you're people watching, on a first date, meeting with a client, or catching up with old friends; an adventure brews.

When visiting Vancouver, B.C. I stopped at a coffee shop with a group of friends. Amidst the nutty notes lingering in the air and the muffled thumping of coffee grounds being emptied into the knock box, a statement was made that sent me on a new path.

A good friend of mine, learning that I had booked a trip with an art tour to Japan, simply stated "I was so excited to learn you were going, but secretly was hoping you'd come to Kenya with me" For the following days, that sentenced echoed around my head, not able to shake it….”come to Kenya with me.” Honestly, it felt like a scene in a movie; Cue the music, cut to the main character, reverberate the last sentence that was said and suddenly the pivotal plot moment arrives and it sets the character on the course of the film.

Admittedly I play out scenes in my head like those and figure that in the film of my life, I don't want there to be anything holding me back and as a photographer I need to continue to look at things through a different lens.

So, after looking up flights, googling the area of Kenya my friend would be traveling and meeting once again at a coffee shop the next statement was made that packed a punch; "So, tell me more about Kenya..."

Mere hours later, my ticket was purchased and my head started swirling with thoughts and a new feeling manifested, that of complete and utter unfamiliarity...and I loved it.

I say again, never underestimate the power of a coffee shop, for it set me on a new course, one that led me to Kenya and later on to Spain. Most of all it awakened a love for saying yes, being bold and remaining open to new and amazing opportunities whether it be across the globe or out your front door.
